I had a ddrum double bass kit that I had to remove the wrap with a heat gun! Glue were wrap connected and around both lugs area and all around the kit! It was a pain! Like watching your channel
I keep coming back and watching this video, but now I have a comment. I have the zoom H8 (which also has an upgraded X/Y mic), and I want to start making some short form videos with my “Cajon as a kick drum” kit using the DW direct link cajon pedal, hats & a snare, outdoors at different scenic locations here in North Texas. I’m going the Behringer ba19a boundary mic inside the Cajon since the H8 will provide 48v power, and have the X/Y mic on a small tripod out of frame in front of the kick/hat/snare setup connected as an audio interface to my iPhone 15pro. I’ve seen many of these types of videos with a traditional Kick drum setup, but none with a Cajon as a kick drum, or with zoom H8 audio. What do you think? I hope to find a small niche for drum videos that has not been tapped yet.
Sure, why not. Go for it!
@@malonedrum thanks for the encouragement! This H8 can do a lot of stuff. I wouldn’t say it’s the absolute best at a particular thing, but it’s a Swiss Army knife for sure if you get the reference lol
I agree. I love slingerlands. I had a purple stain Nashville era kit I sometimes weep over selling. Also had that chrome over brass model too. Killer
I too have a few I regret passing on.
Cool tempered.
Holy moldy
Looks like 21 shell presses . Wow
For sure, different shell press for each size, and maybe a couple for more common sizes like 14
It's so hard to understand what the market is for drums and drum shells, I bought 2 drum kits in my life time. Who's buying all these drums?
Some people like to collect drums, others collect baseball cards, or funko pops. It's great that you've been able to enjoy 2 kits throughout your life, but it's really nothing bizarre or novel that others chose to try different drums more frequently or enjoy collecting.
Well played, Sir. Would love to see you play the break.

I have a set of custom shells of Birch/ Mahogany with Bubinga outer layer. Absolutely love these shells. Nordic is an absolutely great company, highly recommend!!!
That sounds great (and a heck of a lot more affordable than full bubinga)
Thank you! This video is very helpful for me. I will definitely return to it if I decide to convert my floor tom to a bass drum! :-)
Glad it was helpful to you!
Impressive 😮
Agreed!
Very interesting to see how these are hand crafted. Great video.
Great video and and Nordic seems to be a great contender for the shell market. The fact that they are innovating and adding options adds to their appeal. Love to see the snare kits as they come out! Heading to their website now.
I'm hearing a lot of demand for the snare kits, I know they are working on it. Good things take time!
I'm using it - it is second to none! The on-off button is priceless 🙂
Ha, I'm still not very big on needing the on/off button, but I can see where some people may appreciate it.
Im very interested in the snare kits
I know they are still working on it, so keep your eyes peeled.
Most Definitely
Thanks mike for another great video, i believe nordic is producing state of the art shells for many manufacturers, be interesting to know who they are.Have always thought most were using keller.Very excited to hear nordic is offering maple/gum shells as well as up and coming made in japan style shells.Drum kits have become so expensive,i think ill check out what the cost would be to configure a custom kit from them choosing my favorite hardware and finishing them myself.i think thats the way to go these days as long as the top manufacturers continue to over charge for there products.!!!!
Honestly, I don't believe top manufacturers are over charging, and once you price out building a kit with shells, hardware, heads, and all the other parts that go into, you'll see it's just an expensive endeavor. I like building custom because, I can design anything I want, the exact way I want, but companies aren't building these kits for $100 and then charging $5,000. The top of the line kits are expensive to built, aside form the cost of well trained craftsman making them.
I’m about to do this exact set up to my black galaxy snare, thanks for the info
Good luck!
Was that a Gold Strata Ludwig Standard Tom?
Never have owned a gold strata, but I did own some blue/green strata at one point.
yum
🍽️
Sounds awesome. Great work!
Thanks!
But at the end it don't matter when you put a ton of Hardware on the shell and squeeze two drum heads on it. Your thoughts...?
I think it’s a very minimal piece of the overall sound, but it’s interesting because I think a lot of heavier style drummers want thicker shells, but in actually they may want thinner shells in order to have an easier time tuning lower. A good drum has a huge tuning range, but a thinner shell probably has an easier time getting lower or having the shell vibration being complimentary to a lower tuning. Just my opinion.
@@malonedrum Drums with thinner shells usually project less (also depending on the wood of course) and they have a bit of a weird feel when played with power.
I bought a Gretsch Bell Brass a while back. Super well packaged.
Great drum I’m sure!
@@malonedrum People say the Tama version is the best, but the Gretsch bell brass is one of the best sounding drums I've ever heard.
They are def doing gods work. ♫♪♫ Thanks Mike...you rock!
🤘🏼🤘🏼
I wish they just continued to release non drilled kicks tbh. this crap sticking out of the kick looks so cheap and annoying. had to go with catalina club rock instead of renown for that reason alone
I can’t say I think it looks cheap, Yamaha recording customs have them, and they don’t look cheap, vintage kits have them, and they don’t look cheap. I think it’s just personally preference.
It sounds like the thicker the shell, the Lowe the tone.
It’s actually the opposite
Compete opposite
Very nice video, hit home for me. Much respect, great playing, keep up that grind
Appreciate it
I love green colored drums. They always pop
When they are more subtle, I love them
such a shame there's no renowns with virgin 24 kick. have to go with the catalina then
I don’t like a virgin kick, but if it’s important to you, I guess you gotta go a different route.
@@malonedrum sure, its a taste thing. I'm in the market for a 24/16/13 set, huge kicks look ugly drilled to me. actually having second thoughts now as a renown clearly sounds better in this video, more bloom, mids and that vintage mojo overall. and I really like the oyster wrap
This is actually pretty cool, good job man, btw what's the name of this track in the video? I wanna practice to it if possible
It’s from Tim Baltes’ drumless play along tracks you can buy via bandcamp.
@@malonedrum I appreciate it 👍
Well done Mike. You did the right thing going with 14" depth. That size offers the absolute best sound for a kick IMO.
Agreed!
Inspiring. Thank you :)
Your welcome!
Hey Mike! On the bass drum pedal side, did you use a drum Riser or did you just Mount the bass drum pedal directly to the rim?
Didn’t need a riser, used a shorter length beater.
We're those tenors broken? Cause why used a practice pad when you got actual tenors
They were in almost unplayable shape (bearing edges) and were destined for the trash. Tenors are super loud, and take up space, so I'd rather have pads.
Thanks for putting this together and sharing!! We live in the Twin Cities and I had no idea Nordic Shells was located here.
They are a great part of your local drum community!
Is this a Kiefer remix? :) AAAAAA Also I've always wanted to do this but I have no idea what to do with the bearing edges.
Don't know who Kiefer is, but not a remix.
@@malonedrumoh ok, it sounds similar. Look up Kiefer - AAAAA. I think you will like him! 😊
This is fantastic Mike! Keep up the great work on these videos!
Doing my best! Reach out when we can collaborate on one!
This was rad. Thanks Mike and the folks at Nordic for the tour!
Great crew over there!
Wow, they are serious about “the drum business” I’d like to see a 3 ply, I’m sure they could cook one up.
I’m sure hey already have a recipe and process set up for it
Nice playing…..
Thanks
Nordic is the best!
You know it!
Really like the new videos! You've really stepped it up. Not a fan of you starting with "Hey" every episode. Kinda creepy. No other criticism. 😊
🙄
Thank you for this video. I've been eyeballing Nordic for a while now, and seeing how passionate these guys are about drum shells is a breath of fresh air.
Yeah, they are no nonsense.
I don't want to be rude but I'm quite disappointed with Nordic shells quality control: I ordered a 6" shell last year. Shell was porous with encrusted dark dust that even with sanding, wouldn't had come off: I would have destroyed outer ply. 2. Shell MASSIVELY oversized: could bearly fit the drumheads on it and the hoop nearly fit. Even more ridiculous: the lugs were so off : tension rods nearly didn't want to screw since they were so angled.. Smh Don't give me: oh but 6" are rare and they made you a favor doing it. Ffs: did they even test fit it?!? Suuuper disappointed. Sad cause they offer aaaaaa lot more interesting options than Keller but.. Keller are by far a safer choice. I orderded several keller shells: one small detail was off but I was quite satisfied!
I'm sorry to hear you had that experience. I've worked with Nordic a number of times and not had the same experience at all. I'm not sure if you bought just a shell, or had an entire drum built from Nordic, but it sounds like maybe other variables in your drum could also have played a part. As far as the dark spot on the shell, it's important to remember wood is a natural product, so there is variation from drum to drum, especially with certain species. I'd imagine if you reach out to them, they'd love to help you out or investigate the size of your shell and why it didn't work with your heads or hoops.
Stupid complains.....
I wish there was a company like this closer to me, like in the same country ! Not sure if there are any Canadian companies that make drum shells, I've never heard of one.
I’m sure they can ship to you in Canada for a reasonable price
I'm wondering what a drum would sound like if the edges were just left flat, without a bearing edge, would it work ?
It would work, but the resonance and tone would be far from ideal
There would be too much surface area of the shell in contact with the drum head, so much so that the drum head would barely vibrate (if at all). The bearing edge is needed in order to actually get sound out of the drum.
Awesome video 👊🏻
Thanks! 👍
Thank you to Nordic and you. This was enlightening on multiple levels.
Really cool of them to be so open!
This is so cool …
For sure.
Thank you for this, Mike! Good video! Nordic seems legit!
The most legit.
Interesting project. First time watching your channel.
Thanks for watching!
Nice vid, thanks for the tour. The snare kit sounds like something I’d like to try.
It's a great option for those who don't have the skills to just do it all from scratch.
What a great informative vid! Glad to see the pressing machines from my country making these work of art for lots of drummers! Amazing company and amazing video! Keep up the good work love from Taiwan 🇹🇼 ❤
Some seriously good manufacturing happening in Taiwan.
